US Airlines boast record-breaking profits

Major U.S. carries report strong financial health for the first quarter. "We are pleased to report record first-quarter profits,
exceeding the prior record set just last year, "said Doug Parker, chairman and CEO of American Airlines. Southwest, United
Airlines and Delta Air Lines also posted robust results for the quarter.
Airline shares deliver highest returns in a decade
Amid higher fuel prices, U.S. airlines have been able to post profits. "The same factors that made airlines uninvestable for years -- too much capacity, too much debt -- are the opposite now and make them attractive," said Simon Rosenberg, a co-portfolio manager at Snow Capital. Andrew Davis, an analyst at T. Rowe Price Group, said, "I would expect airlines to continue to do well as long as they continue to do the things that got them to this point."Bloomberg (4/1)
